FAA Warns Against Weaponizing Drones
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning this week highlighting the safety issues and illegality of carrying weapons with drones. In a press release the FAA states ”Perhaps you’ve seen online photos and videos of drones with attached guns, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers, and other dangerous items. Do not consider attaching any items such as these to a drone because operating a drone with such an item may result in significant harm to a person and to your bank account.
The consequences of violating the rules come with fines up to $25,000 for each offence and the potential for being criminally prosecuted. Depending on the scenario it is likely that weaponizing drones also violates laws regarding hazardous materials and weapons. The FAA can give permission to approve dangerous operations although they will probably limit this to commercial use with well defined safety protocols.
This warning comes shortly after widespread coverage of the flamethrower drone attachment and popular social media clips of drones launching fireworks. As time goes on I expect to see more commercial use of these tools for purposes like cleaning power lines and hopefully less use that endangers the general public. In the meantime we can stop worrying about rampant flamethrower drones which is a relief.
Thanks again to the FAA for keeping the skies safe.
